Vasic Brings Home Bronze in 3x3 Olympic Debut

TOKYO, Japan – Men's basketball alum Mihailo Vasic '18 is an Olympic medalist, earning bronze with his Serbian teammates in one of the newest additions to the summer Olympic Games, 3x3 Basketball. Vasic, who has represented Serbia in the sport for the past three years made his Olympic debut at the Tokyo games.

Vasic and his Serbian team was the team to watch in the right team men's 3x3 field, winning four of the six World Cup Championships since the inaugural tournament in 2012. Serbia swept through group play earning a 7-0 record and entered the medal round as the top team, earning a bye in the first round of medal play.

In the semifinal round, Serbia suffered its first and only loss of the Olympics with the Russian Olympic Committee squad advancing to the Gold Medal Game. Serbia would go on to defeat Belgium 21-10 in the Bronze Medal Game.

Announced as the newest sport to make its debut in Tokyo, 3x3 Basketball is known for its highly entertaining atmosphere with games played on a half court. The highlight of 3x4 is its fast pace with no break after a goal or foul and the team on offense must take a shot within 12 seconds of possession the ball. Additionally, coaches are not allowed courtside, forcing players to build their own strategy throughout competition.

Vasic, who graduated in 2018 with a degree in psychology, played two seasons at New Haven, averaging 9.3 points and 4.9 rebounds, while he also set an individual season record, shooting 61.5 percent (126-of-205) from the floor in 2016-17 when he averaged 10.5 points per game.
